Just Pinteresting: Pinterest Makes Debut In ComScore's Top 50 Most-Visited U.S. Web Sites for September 2012

ComScore released its list of Top 50 most-visited Web sites in the U.S. for September, and besides the usual big hitters, Pinterest made its debut appearance on the list. According to the Reston, Virginia-based digital analytics services company, September also marked the first time that popular social-media site Pinterest cracked ComScore‘s Top 50 Properties ranking as it surpassed 25 million visitors for the month.

While it’s wonderful to know Pinterest has now cracked ComScore‘s Top 50 Properties ranking, Pinterest has been repeatedly in the news for being one of the top three most visited social networks. At some point not too long ago, there were reports that Pinterest bumped Twitter from #3 to #4 most popular network. Others were saying Pinterest is now second only to Facebook.

Do these social networking popularity contests, however, really matter? Answer: “sort of.”

Yes, it’s good to keep up with trends and these kinds of reports…they should serve as a general guide to social business strategists. And for social media professionals needing to keep abreast of such things, again these lists and rankings are of interest.

But for the business pondering whether it should Pinterest or not, these types of details may not matter as much as relevancy. Is your target market using Pinterest? Or can you leverage Pinterest to extend or complement your online communications in the social sphere? These are the most important factors to heed rather than keeping up with who’s more popular this week than last week or which network penetrated XYZ list of the month.
